The Story of ‘Rock Oil’: From Ancient Life to Modern Fuel

Imagine a substance born from the remains of microscopic marine life millions of years ago, buried under immense pressure and heat, transforming into a thick, black liquid. This is the origin story of Petroleum, quite literally ‘rock oil’ (from the Latin Petra for rock and Oleum for oil). This fossil fuel, found trapped within the pores of sedimentary rocks, is not a single substance but a complex cocktail of hydrocarbons (compounds of hydrogen and carbon) along with organic compounds containing oxygen, nitrogen, and sulphur.

Once extracted through drilling, crude oil is transported to a refinery. Think of a refinery as a high-tech kitchen where crude oil is ‘cooked’ in a process called fractional distillation. By heating the oil to different temperatures, it separates into various products based on their boiling points, creating everything from heavy bitumen for roads to light LPG for our homes.

Fun Fact: The Digboi oil refinery in Assam, commissioned in 1901, is not only India’s oldest operating refinery but also the oldest in Asia. It marks the birthplace of India’s petroleum industry.

To boost domestic production and attract investment, India has progressively reformed its exploration policy. The two landmark policies are NELP and HELP.

Given our import dependency, how does India protect itself from a sudden supply crisis? The answer lies in Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPRs).

Analogy: Think of SPRs as India’s ‘energy piggy bank’—massive underground rock caverns storing crude oil for a rainy day. This reserve acts as a crucial cushion against war, natural disasters, or deliberate supply cuts, ensuring the country can function for a period even if imports stop.

These reserves are managed by the Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited (ISPRL). The currently operational reserves are:
